ADHD natural remedy – Herbal remedy for ADHD – ADHD natural treatment
Over the years many attempts have been made to find natural therapies for ADHD in order to avoid the use of stimulants such as Ritalin. Very little research has been done in this area since the medical profession has focused their attention almost exclusively on the use of stimulant drugs. It does seem probable that some nutrients or herbal remedies could eventually be found to be helpful. Some herbal remedies used in ADHD include ginkgo biloba and St. John’s wort. Here’s a research abstract on ADHD herbal remedy.
Effect of the herbal extract combination Panax quinquefolium and Ginkgo biloba on attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: a pilot study.
J Psychiatry Neurosci. 2001 May;26(3):221-8. Oceanside Functional Medicine Research Institute, Nanaimo, BC.
A combination herbal product containing American ginseng extract, Panax quinquefolium, (200 mg) and Ginkgo biloba extract (50 mg) (AD-FX; CV Technologies, Edmonton, Alta.) was tested for its ability to improve the symptoms of ADHD. AD-FX capsules were taken twice a day on an empty stomach for 4 weeks. Patients were instructed not to change any other medications during the study. After 2 weeks of the ADHD herbal remedy treatment, the proportion of the subjects exhibiting improvement ranged from 31% for the anxious-shy attribute to 67% for the psychosomatic attribute. After 4 weeks of treatment, the proportion of subjects exhibiting improvement ranged from 44% for the social problems attribute to 74% for the Conners’ ADHD index and the DSM-IV hyperactive-impulsive attribute. Five (14%) of 36 subjects reported adverse events, only 2 of which were considered related to the study medication. These preliminary results suggest AD-FX treatment may improve symptoms of ADHD and should encourage further research on the use of ginseng and Ginkgo biloba extracts to treat ADHD symptoms.
Comments: It may be preferable at first to just try one herb for a few weeks before adding another one. The combination of herbal remedy with pharmaceutical medication may be unpredictable. We suggest using the herbal remedy by itself, not in combination with ADHD drugs.

How you think with …
How you think with ADHD?
Check out my video!
What doctors? What …
What doctors? What scientists? All I saw regarding L-Theanine’s efficacy with treating ADHD on that site were average Joes & Janes spouting off with no references aside from this video. Not exactly the sort of stuff to fill one with confidence. Now if you have a link that contains any legitimate, citable, peer-reviewed research, I’ll gladly look at it, but please don’t pretend that encognitive contains anything credible on the subject. It doesn’t.
That’s your opinion …
That’s your opinion and I respect it. But I think I’ll believe the opinions of the doctors and scientists on the site over yours.
Thank-you for your opinion.
THIS is your …
THIS is your reference point, a site that reads like the National Enquiror for anti-establishment pseudo medicine? After the first 4 pages of stories that are either old news, undergoing challenge, completely debunked by other research, or out-and-out fabrication.
The good news: I didn’t see anything actually harmful.
The bad news: NOTHING credible or explanatory on L-Theanine as applied to ADHD. That site is an absolute joke from an academic standpoint.
To get the HOW, …
To get the HOW, visit the encognitive site and read the articles.
Everything in your body is made from food, including your brain. Your cells are made from food. If you don’t believe this, try not eating for a month and see what happens.
Again, visit the encognitive site to research.
They don’t mention …
They don’t mention at any point HOW this chemical helps the prefrontal cortex function better, even in theory. Of course, this IS a 700 Club clip – not exactly the most thourough of investigative reporting. I go a Christian grad school, going after my Master’s in marriage/family/children’s counseling. All my profs tell me that the nutrition angle is bogus, and all the studies I’ve seen on it are discredited. Not that I’m against eating right, but do it for the right reasons.
i have never been …
i have never been to a doctor but ive read some stuff on the internet and compared my symptoms and i think i have adhd. ever since i was a kid i had trouble falling asleep, i zone out in the middle of conversations, i have a hard time focusing and get sidetracked a lot, BUT when i focus on 1 thing and JUST 1 thing at a time i do great. like i can ride my dirt bike on a track and be 100% focused but when i do something else i keep getting sidetracked and lose focus.
There are a very …
There are a very small percentage of people who truly have ADHD and other mental illnesses. A very small %.
These days, ADHD is being diagnosed as a business for the pharmaceutical companies.
ADHD is a …
ADHD is a legitimate neurological disorder, it’s unfortunate that people like Gretchen LeFever who’s study was discredited gets no mention.
There is no controversy about the effectiveness of medication for ADHD. I have ADHD, diagnosed in the 60’s I lived on a farm and suger and all fast foods and sweets spoken of simply were not part of my life and I struggled despite a healthy diet. Food is not the cause of ADHD, it’s a genetic condition and there is not a shred of scientific evidence for it.
# 1 Human beings …
# 1 Human beings tend to care about other human beings, particularly little human beings.
# 2 They make mistakes and are not perfect but to paint teachers and schools in a negative light because of this is ridiculous.
And it is not for you or I to judge who does or does not ” truly have a problem” that requires medication. Medication is an option and should be approached in an informed manner. Information that should be gained through specialists, research and personal experience.
Blanket statements …
Blanket statements like “Schools do not care about your health. They just care about their image” and “medication should only be for those who truly have a problem” are merely scare mongering.
How dare you do that to parents who may be struggling. You need to be more responsible with your comments.
Schools are run by human beings. A fact that has two meanings for me.
My biggest issue …
My biggest issue with misinformation like this is that if someone were to take this info for granted they may try and treat ADD, OCD and Autism the same.
These poor children with ADD and/or Autism (which sometimes can present similarly) are forced to endure years of interventions that *do not work* if they have been misdiagnosed.
As far as the rest of your statement about medications. I won’t do anything with this but be perfectly blunt.
You sound like an idiot.
Psychologist or …
Psychologist or Psychiatrist?
And what do you mean by “realm”?
Again, Alzheimer’s is a frontal lobe disease, as is dementia and even possibly schizophrenia. Furthermore, puberty alone causes disruptions in the frontal lobe which cause neurons to misfire (or “how information is distributed “). These are obviously not all the same.
It’s frustrating to me that just because a person is a “psych” (either kind) their word is law. It’s not. If it doesn’t sound right question it. Educate yourself.
My psych put ADD, …
My psych put ADD, OCD, and Autism in the same realm. Not only are they problems with the frontal lobe, but it has to do with how information is distributed to the frontal lobe.
I wouldn’t put my child on ADD drugs. I would change their environment. Schools do not care about your health. They just care about their image so of course they will advocate drug use. I dislike that. I think the medication should only be for those who truly have a problem or are adults with the problem.

I personally think …
I personally think that school recess needs to be extended. Children spend way too much time inside a climate controlled building. Please, keep in mind that I’m not placing any blame. I just believe that it would help a little. Children need to learn, but they also need to be quirky, weird kids imho. I am not bashing medicine, but if it can be avoided, it should.
ADHD is not a …
ADHD is not a milder form of Autism. My son has Asperger’s and ADHD, are you suggesting he has 2 types of Autism or just extra Autistic Autism?
Although I know …
Although I know there are a few Doctors, certainly not the majority, who place ADHD on the Autism spectrum, a decision I question, it is too bold and misleading a statement to say that ADHD is a “mild form of Autism”. I also take exception to the description of any form of Autism as “mild”, but I digress…
Personally I would …
Personally I would prefer ADHD to be categorized as an LD (a Learning Disability). At its basic level ADHD presents as an inability to focus on a singular task for a significant amount of time. In the case of classic, Type 3 (Combined Type) ADHD the deficit is more pervasive and the hyperactivity extends to the physical.
On the other hand, …
On the other hand, Autism manifests itself, again in its basic form, as impaired social interaction and communication. There are 5 PDDs (Pervasive Developmental Disorders) but the two most widely known are the classic, non-verbal Autism where communication is limited and Asperger’s Syndrome in which communication is disproportionate.
As you can see, …
As you can see, neither ADHD nor Autism has anything to do with the other. The only way you would be able to connect the two is that both impairments stem from issues with the frontal lobe. The frontal lobe, the largest lobe of the brain, is also the birth place of Alzheimer’s disease. Surely you would not put Alzheimers on the Autism spectrum as well.
When diagnosed …
When diagnosed together, ADHD and Autism are in fact described as “Comorbid Diagnoses”, the presence of one or more disorders (or diseases) in addition to a primary disease or disorder.
I strongly disagree …
I strongly disagree with your opinion that these disorders are caused solely by “environmental factors”. Our family is well functioning and otherwise healthy. We spent an entire year exploring dietary allergies/interventions, we have never lived in a house with lead paint and our son was not given immunizations until well after his ADHD and Autism were diagnosed.
