We think that many depressions are related to the neurotransmitter serotonin. This is a chemical our body produces that fits between some nerve cells in our brain to allow one cell to talk to the next one. Most anti-depressant medications currently used are in the class called SSRI, which stands for selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor. In other words, the meds work to allow serotonin to remain in the brain longer than it has been. There are some things that naturally seem to impact serotonin. For example, chocolate has a very temporary impact on serotonin, which may explain why we feel better when we eat it. (At least until we get on the scale.) Chamomile tea may help with serotonin too. But perhaps one of the best things we can do is get exercise. Try to get at least 30 minutes a day of brisk walking or better in and you may notice some improvement in your mood. I hope you are feeling better soon and can enjoy being a momma.

There is an herb called St. John’s Wart. It has been effective so much that it is sometimes called nature’s prozac. The problem with herbs is that they will take a while to get into your system to the level that they do any good. It has also been formulated into a suppliment called SAM-e.

St. Johns Wort is the best…you can find it in capsules at the grocery store or health food store. I used it for a while and so did my boyfriend.
