Comparing Canadian and American Health Care
Posted by admin on Sep 10, 2009
For the first time ever, KPBS teams up with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to compare American privatized medicine with government funded, universal health care in Canada. In the end, which system would make us healthier? In which country would we live longer? And is basic health care a right or a privilege? [San Diego Week broadcasts this Envision San Diego episode called "Right to Health" Friday July 3, 2009]
Duration : 0:26:48

in israel we pay 8 …
in israel we pay 8 dollars a month…and i get any thing i want for like nothing
Americans have been …
Americans have been propagandized for generations to vote against their own interests. They no longer are able to think for themselves.
They don’t have a free press, so they never hear the truth, only the corporate for-profit line.
Overall Canada …
Overall Canada still has better coverage. The reason why Canadians are healthier than us is because you have extra money to help live a better life style. We’re practically broke all the time trying to pay for medical expenses and coverage, so it weighs on us mentally, thereby increasing stress and chances of obesity or diabetes.
Our lifestyles are different. I support Universal Healthcare completely.
Obama is a …
Obama is a communist/socialist/Nazi for attempting universal heathcare for all the Yanks, but a hero for Freedom if, he increases money for the war efforts in Afghanistan. Yep, seems contradictory.
Hmmm???? Wait for …
Hmmm???? Wait for an MRI??? I am Canadian and had injured my shoulder but I didn’t worry about it or even mention it to my doctor for 2-3 months after the fact. Then in a matter of fact kind of way I had mentioned to my Dr and I had an MRI after waiting 2 days!!!! So whats all this nonsense about having to wait for an MRI??
to serge 118: …
to serge 118: please show some compassion –just because someone is poor does not mean –they are supposed to die-everyone should be covered-rich,poor, middleclass–or whatever–like they do in europe
to motovating: …
to motovating: please lets stop all this talk about communism–everyone in america –the US. too-should be covered–regardless-let’s stop quibbling about socialism–and get everyone good health care–no one should have to suffer because they have little or no money–we can vote the greedy medical corporation insurance companies out of business
I’m a Canadian, and …
I’m a Canadian, and definitely agree this is a well done documentary. My only dispute is with the Alberta man living in San Diego. If he had his blood clot in Canada, (an issue which I have had myself), he would have had his ultrasound done immediately or soon after going into a hospital. In my case an ultrasound was done within minutes of being seen, and after months of free blood thinners my leg was checked on two other occasions by an ultrasound operator to be sure there was no more danger.
We Need A Public …
We Need A Public Option Plan!
Anyone who has questions regarding the public option may be able to find the answers in the comment section of my profile. I have a wide variety of resources and information including the ez to read version of the bill and several ways in which you can become more involved.
This is a good …
This is a good documentary. out of all the healthcare vids this one wasn’t bias to either side and covered both pros and cons of both healthcare systems.
Excellent …
Excellent presentation. If only the national health care debate in America was this logical and rational.
socialism is about …
socialism is about provide equal resources and egalitarianism, which you do not see with public schools and libraries which are of varying quality based on economics
Yes, they are. …
Yes, they are. Pooling money to provide services for the public good is “socialism”. So why is doing it for health care so very very evil ?
Public school and …
Public school and libraries are not socialist institutions
No, having …
No, having socialist institutions like public schools and public libraries isn’t the same as communism.
There is little or …
There is little or no wait to see your family doctor if needed. Emergency rooms are always there but if your family doctor can treat the problem, I can see the doctor the same day or next day if required. I have never experienced a wait to see a family doctor. A Canadian.
health care is a …
health care is a human right i can’t believe Americans tolerate their disease industry. I could not live in a country like that if i had a choice.
Fair point, however …
Fair point, however its the petro dollar that pays for that army. I watched a documentary about the US and petro dollar, it was frightning as it showed all the figures which showed the US should be bankrupt now but the rest of the world is terrified of the financial impact of the US going bust. That is the reason Irac started to trade its oil in euros and was then invaded. Iran and the other axis of evil wanted to do the same, but held back after being put on the axis of evil.
That’s why we have …
That’s why we have a huge military. Who needs the petrodollar when we can just come up with a reason to invade Hugo Chavez’s country and just own the oil itself. Then we can invade Kuwait and half of the ME, too. Then we’ll own the tokens and the arcade machines.
I never had to wait …
I never had to wait for an MRI when I lived in Canada. It makes a huge difference where you live in Canada. But for every Canadian that is waiting for an MRI, there are 100 Americans not getting medical attention they need.
After living under both the Canadian and American systems, I would take the Canadian system every time.
you could make that …
you could make that argument
That is a very weak …
That is a very weak argument. Using your basis for argument must mean fasism is one step to the right of capitalism?
You are just making …
You are just making my point for me. Communism is Socialism taken one step further. So there are basically the same
One thing is for …
One thing is for sure, we are seeing the demise of the USA, and when the rest of the world stops using dollars to buy oil, the USA will be bankrupt, so sooner or later you are going to have to do something.
France is probably …
France is probably the most socialist country in the EU and probably has the best healthg service in the EU. I travel to France and can vouch on how good it is.
The UK has three systems, National Health, Private and Co-Operative.
