What are "Antioxidants" in the context of health and nutrition?

For example if a particular fruit/vegetable or food is said to be high in "antioxidants", what does it mean?
high antioxidant food helps to prevent oxidation which means that it helps to prevent the signs of aging. Not only that, but even more importantly, you are actually going to be healthy because these antioxidants help to fight off free radicals in the body which are what cause the most damage to the organs in the body.

Doesn’t mean much. Your body fights diseases and cancer by creating free radicals. Anti-oxidants are supposed to "kill" free radicals, which are supposedly "bad". Well, truth is, allthings in moderation are a good thing, including fruits, vegetables, fats, sugars, and meats. There has been much ado about this, but not much truth being told. Stick with a balanced diet and, above all, the ONE THING that has been shown to EXTEND LIFE is to EAT LESS of everything, all the time.
