When did the NHS stop caring about people and started caring about cash?

Posted by admin on Feb 12, 2010

How can "CARE" be a target when value for money is the only measurable target the government want? (An alternate to the question above is ‘Are accountants running the health service’?)
I work in the NHS. I am sad to see the comments below. Yes I use the NHS as well and it is a great relief to know it is there to help. But I work in an area that has no measurable outcome (for the accountants) ‘quality care and peaceful death’ is not a measurable outcome. Therefore the staff are seen as a resource, we are moved elsewhere and our standards slip. All to do with the managers, accountants and targets.

Since the position of Matron was abolished, coupled with the market forces initiated by Maggie.
There are too many "managers" on productivity bonuses and inflated salaries that have taken the money from the sharp end to the boardroom.

When the government came up with the idea of targets and lists as a way of measuring ‘efficiency’.
The same thing is happening in the education sector.

1982. Mad bitch called Thatcher started the rise of managerialism. I was working in the NHS at the time. One day our small hospital was run by one man and two secretaries…the next we had 48 ‘managers’.

These managers have been bleeding the system dry ever since. they are leeching scum.

probably before but definately since Labour came into power with their targets for this that and the other. Anyone can reach a target by cutting corners. I dont want the NHS to reduce waiting times if you are thrown out of the door 2 mins after an operation..

Ive recently spent a couple of days in hospital and the things i seen where quite shocking. I didnt realise quite how much the NHS were lacking till seeing it with my own eyes. There were other shocking things happening when it came to the doctors too, they relied on me to tell them if the woman with dementia had had her medicine and food and what time at and what she ate, they didn’t have a clue what the nurses were doing, terrible lack of communication.

I just want to add that i appreciate nurses completely and the brilliant jobs they do caring for people but they are under staffed and arnt given enough help from the power at the top of the NHS. I didnt mean to offend the hard working NHS staff out there, it isnt their fault that the topdogs are idiots.

When the labour government under Tony Blair decided to base budgets on the productivity of hospitals.
So then they had to get people in, and get people out quickly, or they wouldn’t get paid.

the modern fast track to success is to blame, bricklayers 5 year apprenticeship is now 3 years. joiners is 2 years. plasterers 6 months! very soon a junior doctor will be somebody from the back into employment scheme from the dole. 80 quid a week plus benefits. the only ones in the NHS who care are the ones on regular hours and a decent wage i:e the cleaners and porters. nurses and junior doctors the NHS is taking the piss 60 hours working week, no overtime pay, but hey! the british government can build a nuclear submarine for 130 million quid. i once had to crawl into hospital on my belly because i tore my calf tendons, i passed out then i came around again it was 2 hours before i seen the triage nurse, she was busy with some twat that broke his thumb in a bar fight. accountants arent ruining the national health service its the hypocratic oath thats doing it. all junior doctors and nurses must strike now! 60 hours a week on basic pay! fu’ck off!

They stopped caring when all the law suits started to come in and the pc brigade took over.
I’m a nurse in a dementia unit for the nhs, and you wouldn’t believe what we are and aren’t allowed to do.
we cant get a preacher on a sunday incase we insult other faiths……now i live in a small town in north east scotland, and their are no other faiths in the ward. its all old local people and some from england that moved up here years ago.
we used to be able to get a minister on a sunday but now we have been told to stop. i know they have dementia but you’d be surprised the old people who don’t know their names, but can remember every word of some hymns.
they are not allowed to have their meals heated up for them. you cant always serve a dementia patients meals at the proper meal times, as they fall asleep and some can sleep quite late in the mornings.
so if they miss a meal they have to have sandwiches instead, and if they lie in they cant have porridge heated up for them
all because we might "burn or poison" them. do they think we are so stupid that we dont know how to use a microwave and not take the temp of it after.
we are allowed to give patients dangerous drugs, stab them with needles, take blood from them, stitch them, and change their dressings…………but we’re not allowed to heat their meals!!
And as for the accounts ……..yes they are running the nhs.
we have to cut back on things that patients need because we have used up our budget. Yet next year we are getting "scrubs" to wear instead of uniforms (where we are , i dont know of any other trust doing this) because it will be cheaper to wash. at the moment we are wearing uniforms that are only six years old, and most of us take them home and wash them ourselves as you cant trust the laundry to get them back in time before your next shift.
i could go on but i would be here till midnight.

Crazy Diamond…..thats awful. they should have been able to look at what drugs she had by looking at the drugs kardex in her name. and if she wasn’t eating well she should have been on a chart and a fluid balance chart too.

The NHS is still one of the best in the world . The vast majority of this generations grand parents lived in TOTAL FEAR of falling ill and could not afford a doctor until Labour introduced the NHS FOR ALL AND EVERYONE. The Tories have done everything to haul down and destroy this Labour monument to the nation whenever they can. Correct funding can be a problem , but one day you will be so so glad of the NHS , and you have probably been treated , as many have , and spend time knocking it on Y.

The NHS just like Education is a political football and just gets kicked around by the politicians, the press and then the people who own it, us, the electorate.

I put it like this.

The National Health Service is our living memorial to our war dead of WW-One and WW-Two.

In 1919 when our boys came home from Flanders, they were told they would be returning to a "home fit for heroes". No such place existed.

In 1945 the British people were taking no more chances and got shot of Winston Churchill who they knew would not give them what they wanted. What did we do? We gave Labour a massive landslide victory in c1945.

We even gave Tony Blair a similar land-slide victory – "Things can only get better". What happened to that?

What have Labour done with the victory we handed to them on a plate? They have squandered it on sleaze and scandal and corrupt practises.

We now have four million families in UK who must chose between heating or eating.

We are now back where we started.

All this has come about because Labour has forgotten it’s mission and has forgotten the people who put it into power.
Far too many Labour politicos thumb their noses at us, claim large expenses [benefits] at our expense and do nothing to alleviate the condition of the poor and the down trodden.

The wages of the Common People have not risen in real terms here in UK since the 1970s. Labour has done nothing. The Tories will do even less and as for the Lib/Dems, they are just totally useless.

All of the politicians and their parties are now slaves of big business, and in particular the mouth pieces of Corporate America.

Most of the West End NHS surgeries have already been sold off to the Americans who plan to privatise the NHS and sell it to Corporate America.

Voting is not going to do any good. The time has come now for Revolution.

I don’t use the NHS because the hospitals are so filthy and the staff have no idea of basic hygiene. They use the cheapest drugs available and have no thought for the patients. Sorry but my experience of the NHS is that most patients end up as victims. If the Doctors and nurses stood up to management then things maybe a lot better, but they don’t want to loose their big salaries and I do know how much they get paid my Daughter worked for the NHS she left because she was so disgusted with the quality of the staff that were being employed.

when the government cared more about budgets that peoples lives. i remember when the hospitals used to be so very clean and the staff cared. my last experience was horrific. i went into our local hospital for a c-section in 2005. and didn’t just come home with a baby, came home with MRSA in my c-section scar. the staff there said that everything was fine when my scar swelled up and a lump formed on the end of my scar.they sent me home after 2 days. i kept telling my midwife something was wrong as i had severe pain and discomfort. they basically ignored me until i was rushed into hospital when the lump opened up and my c-section scar started to open up.
all the hospitals and government think of is money, money, money!! shame on them for putting peoples lives at risk.
take care.warm regards xxx
