Where can I find up to date, non biased, information about the health care reform, online?

Posted by admin on Nov 19, 2009

The news is useless, and unreliable, so maybe there is an alternate source… Like a website that just shows the votes, and what’s been determined so far?

There are several health care reform bills out there. Congress won’t post them online for us to read them — so you are out of luck. (Apparently, the LAST time they posted a health care bill online, people READ the darn thing and since neither senators nor congressmen had done the same, they looked like fools. ) They don’t want us to know what it’s about. This way they can "tell us" what they want us to know and color it however they want. You can find a "synopsis" of what congress wants you to know easily enough. Unfortunately, I’m more concerned with the things they do NOT want us to know.

I don’t know about you, but I just don’t trust them.

8 yr old Doberman in good health with good diet. All natural canned daily passing out within last 30 days?

Posted by admin on Nov 19, 2009

2 episodes in last thirty days simply losing consciousness briefly. now today he has had this happen 6 times, 2 of which he lost bladder control. no convulsions that I can tell only momentarily ( under 2 minutes) completely losing consciousness. 4 times while getting excited. two times while perfectly relaxed and no excitement at all. Please try to help we love this dog so much.we are going to the vet first thing in the morning 7AM but we are so worried we want to try to have some idea what to expect when the results from tests arrive, and what to do to try to help this stop tonight . we are afraid to go to sleep!! he also is obviously not feeling well off and on and is shake like nervous shaky .
sorry the system won’t let me get it posted under dogs this is closest I could get atleast it is in animal section SOOOO SORRY guys please understand

It might be a neurological problem, but please ask the vet to also check for Hypothyroidism as well as Addison’s disease. – Seizures can be a clinical sign for Hypothyroidism and collapsing and shaking is characteristic for Addison’s disease, which can ‘come on’ very suddenly. Addisonian dogs can’t cope with any kind of stress – which might explain the sudden collapse.

Please make sure to mention those two conditions to your vet. Addison’s is thought to be a rare condition by most vets, but unfortunately it is no longer rare. Ask for an electrolyte blood test.
Most vets are also not aware that seizures of all kinds can be clinical signs for Hypothyroidism – so please make sure s/he checks for it with a full thyroid panel.

Make sure your dog is well hydrated at all times. IF this were Addison’s, dehydration can be life threatening.

All the best,
Christina

Is it possible to be allergic to Chinese herbal medicine?

Posted by admin on Nov 15, 2009

i went to my doctor the other day feeling rather sick and he told me i was either suffering from high anxiety or some kind of virus. when i came home i took one of my mothers herbal anxiety pills supposed to be 100% natural, i have never had an allergic reaction to anything before but this made me very nauseous and more anxious then before. could it be an allergic reaction?

You can have an allergic reaction to anything you put in you, or on you. And it doesn’t really need to be something your allergic to, just sensitive. Before the doctor got my medicine right for my Lupus I had two very bad reactions. With medicine from the pharmacist he can give you a list of what the reactions could be. I had them very bad on one medicine. But every reaction is different with each one that I took. With herbs look up what the side effects could be. Just because is says all natural does not mean that it can’t hurt you. Herbs have been used for medicine for years. You have to be careful what you take, and do not add more than one at a time in case you have a reaction. Then you will know what caused it.

What health and nutrition topics interest you?

Posted by admin on Nov 15, 2009

I am the Nutrition feature writer for Suite 101. I love my job. I am looking to find more topics and ways to attract more readers and reader participation.

http://nutrition.suite101.com/

What nutrition topics would attract more readers?
How could I get more comments on this page? (Readers have to become members of the site to comment)
Do you think there are some effective ways to get more people to come to my site? What are they?

It is simple – appeal to people’s vanity. They want to know what will help them lose weight, look younger, increase physical stamina, increase sexual prowess. I am not saying these are the most healthy kind of topics to draw people in, but anything to do with how to look better and be better would probably work.

Another humble note-ish on Economics in its entirety… sort of.?

Posted by admin on Nov 15, 2009

I’m trying to put this in the most efficient way possible. This wasn’t for fun, I’d be writing a poem if I wanted "fun."

It’s long again. I hope it’s worth it, and accurate enough for you naysayers.

—————-

It’s not going too great right now.
America’s economy is fucked, and it was even before the recent crisis. Here’s the problem.

Our gross domestic product (GDP) is screwed.

But wait… that doesn’t make sense, does it? After all, we’re around first to second globally when it comes to GDP, coming in at about thirteen trillion dollars. That’s great, but there’s a problem. We’re also in a massive pool of debt: ten trillion dollars worth. When your national debt comes close to your GDP, something’s fishy.

But how did we enter such a huge debt? We’ve always been in debt. Only the conservative democrat Andrew Jackson managed to significantly reduce it, but that was very short lived when the Panic of 1837 occurred. Since then, it’s dramatically increased for the most part, especially in the past twenty years. Ronald Reagan was a huge part of this, which means, yes nitwits, Reaganomics doesn’t fucking work. The “trickle down” theory only concentrates the wealth on the richest members of America.

The idea was, and still is, that if tax breaks are offered to the rich, they’ll invest in things like charities, factories, etc. Nobody seemed to remember that America is now part of a global economy, so the rich will probably invest more in areas where they can get the highest return/profit, outside of the U.S, which is why the policy has failed on a very large scale. So when McCain says he’s offering tax breaks to the rich because by some miracle that’ll help out small business, he’s just flat out wrong.

Clinton did increase debt, but not by much. Rather, he leveled it out. How? His idea of achieving fiscal responsibility: “Pay as you go.” What this meant was that if taxes were cut, so was spending. Revenue increased extremely, and everything seemed to be going just magnificently.

And then Bush came.

Following the failed concepts of Reaganomics and neo-conservatism, President Bush Jr. managed to increase our debt to GDP ratio up to more than 60%. Of course, the Afghan War (by the way, what happened to that?) and the Iraq War ($10 billion a month while the California-sized country itself has a $79 billion dollar surplus) did contribute. But should we have been there in the first place is the main question. One is yes, the other maybe, probably no… actually, almost definitely no.

So what can we do to fix the economy? When Obama says “change comes from the bottom up,” it’s not just a catchy phrase. It’s an economic plan. By increasing the productivity of workers across the United States, global capital will naturally come to us if we can increase our net import/export value from the GDP. We export more than we import… that’s bad. If we work on more “American based” products, and not rely on China so much for, well, um, everything, that would definitely decrease our debt as of now. It wouldn’t obliterate it, but it would significantly lower it. Reducing energy costs is also another major factor. The idea is to avoid oil in it’s entirety by focusing on alternate energy sources: wind, solar, tide/hydroelectric, etc. Nuclear power is just too risky, and offshore drilling just doesn’t work. It would only have a major effect in 10 years. The argument then becomes if we had used offshore drilling when Bush became president, none of these energy issues would’ve happened. That’s great, but this is now, and there’s no point in waiting another ten years using the product that got us into the crisis in the first place.

However, the main way to increase productivity is through health care, i.e. Universal Health Care (UHC). Whether it is single payer or multi-payer, single probably being the best choice, Americans wouldn’t have to worry nearly as much about the hellhole that is private insurance. Premiums would be almost non-existent or even totally gone. This means employers won’t have to pay as much as before. Jobs would increase because of the new portability of the increase, and so would wages because, again, employers are paying less for health care, so they have more freedom. Businesses would end up prospering just because of UHC. In fact, the National Coalition on Health Care released a report in 2005 showing a single payer system for UHC could even save America $1.1 trillion dollars over 10 years. Our current system using the free market guarantees us that we can never get UHC because the free market makes sure private insurers don’t insure those who really are sick because they’re of such high cost.

So, what’s the conclusion?

You tell me.
Comment.

"In fact, the National Coalition on Health Care released a report in 2005 showing a single payer system for UHC could even save America $1.1 trillion dollars over 10 years."

Several problems with your essay, this being one of them. You haven’t convinced me why this is Bush’s fault aside from quoting labels used – "Reaganomics" and "trickle down"

Further, what does the UHC have anything to do with increasing economic productivity?

Posted by admin on Nov 15, 2009

There have been many younger women older men pairing for years. Some have been married for years and have several children. Some people might argue that the older men use viagra. But there have been many older men younger women relationships thru history who have had children years before Viagra. Did they have natural herbs or supplements? Did good health, exercise and being in shape play a role? I have some older men today don’t need Viagra but the ones that don’t tend to be in good shape and excellent health.

you know that watermelon and maca works as viagra so those old people must had used any one of them.

I also have interest in plants and what they are and what they are used for. Im lost because i dont know whta to major or minor in…

Help Help Help……l

You have so many options to chose from.

The study of Herbalism will prepare you to learn how to prepare and use Herbal Medicine. Contrary to what another person answered, you can take College programs in Herbalism. There are many different types of Herbalism programs out there, from basic correspondence courses that give you the basic tools and understanding to help yourself and family, to full time 4+ years of in school studies to become a professional Medical Herbalist.

Phytotherapy is the study of the use of extracts from natural origin as medicines of health-promoting agents. Its less hands on with the plants, and deals more with the extracts.

Pharmacognosy is the study of medicines derived from natural sources. With this course of study, you would be looking more in depth into specific compounds within plants that are used to make medicines.

Ethnopharmacology is the scientific study correlating ethnic groups, their health, and how it relates to their physical habits and methodology in creating and using medicines. This would give you a good background into the different plants that are traditionally used in different parts of the world by different ethnic groups, which will prepare you for your world travels.

Ethnobotany is the study of the relationship between people and plants, sort of like combining Anthropology and Botany and Social Science. This will not only include medicinal uses, but use in ritual, food, divination, textiles, currency, and social life. As an Ethnobotanist, you would have many opportunities to travel as part of your work.

I think a study of Botany would give you an excellent foundation from which to build on. From there, you can branch out into the area of herbal medicine that most appeals to you, and provides you with the employment opportunities and income range you prefer.

How do I pursue a career in health and nutrition?…?

Posted by admin on Nov 10, 2009

I am 24 years old and have not been to college or had any higher education.
I am passionate about food and health. I live in a town of about 30 000.
Am I too old to go to University (I live in Australia, so it isn’t called college here).
Is it too late?
Where do I begin? They have a place called TAFE over here, kinda like Community College in the U.S, but the courses they offer have nothing to do with what I am interested in.
Can someone please give some advice???

Thanks!

G’day,

Definitely not too late mate! 24? You’re just a spring chicken ;)

Depending on your current employment and highest education level, you MIGHT able to study in a uni via distance learning/online education as a mature age students. Some TAFE colleges do have these study methods as well. As long as you have internet connection (as I believe you do, since you are able to post this question), you are set to learn. Unfortunately you did not mention which town you are in now. However it doesn’t really matter, since with distance learning method, you can actually be anywhere in the world.

A quick look on some Uni courses that offers nutrition courses as follows:
Deakin Uni (www.deakin.edu.au)
Uni of SA (www.unisa.edu.au)
Uni of Western Sydney (www.uws.edu.au)
QUT (www.qut.edu.au)
Charles Sturt Uni (www.csu.edu.au)
Uni of Canberra (www.canberra.edu.au)
Uni of Newcastle (www.newcastle.edu.au)
Uni of Wollongong (www.wollongong.edu.au)
Monash Uni (www.monash.edu.au)
Flinders Uni (www.flinders.edu.au)
La Trobe Uni (www.latrobe.edu.au)
Curtin Uni (www.cut.edu.au)
Uni of Sydney (www.usyd.edu.au)

You can try to check if the course is available via distance learning. I know that Deakin Uni has a good reputation for distance learning study.

Good luck for your study :)

Are there any herbal/natural medicines/remedies for bipolar depression?

Posted by admin on Nov 6, 2009

I’ve heard that exercise is supposed to work, which I’ve tried. It works for a couple of hours max. after a good workout and then I hit rock bottom again. Also I don’t have any clues how to control the "highs". It’s got to the point where I can’t just let it go on because I can tell it’s getting worse, especially the depression side of it.
I know that St. John’s Wort is used for depression, but I read somewhere that it shouldn’t be used for bipolar depression.
Although I do want to lose some weight, my main aims in working out was to try and balance my moods. I’m ok with losing weight, I need help with something to balance my moods.
I have changed my diet dramatically making sure I get a well balanced diet and I’ve been exercising. I’ve tested this method for almost 10 months and it’s only just got worse.

Ok, please ignore the bottom answer. It looks like a spammer.
Now, having said that, you really need to talk to a professional. Bipolar disorder can be mitigated (lessened) but your healthcare professional needs to take the reigns of your treatment overall. Exercise can help but it is not the only part of the solution. You need to watch your diet, but that is a given. St. John’s Wort works differently for different people. It is not a solution for all type of depression and I have not heard anything about it helping bipolar disorder. One thing you can do is help your doctor by telling him or her when you tend to experience the mania. Has it been stressed induced lately? Meditate. Yoga and meditation can help refocus in between episodes. I do that for my add. Now, course, they are different but they do have similarities also. So, before you go to your "over the counter herbalistic juxtaposed place," make sure that you consult with a physician/psychiatrist and say that you definitely would prefer some more homeopathic avenues. Note that even with homeopathic assistance, you may still require some medication or at least dr’s assistance
